Listen: Spires – “Candy Flip”
-
Caution: this one may give you flashbacks. On “Candy Flip”, Brooklyn five-piece Spires seamlessly incorporate elements of 60’s psychedelia and 90’s shoegaze to create an instantly captivating blend all their own. In the process, they cement their status as a band to watch in 2014.
“Candy Flip” opens with a vaguely sitar-like drone—a nod, perhaps, to their psychedelic forefathers—but it quickly kicks in to sunshiny stoner anthem overdrive. Lead singer Matt Stevenson waxes philosophical (“journey through your mind/make arrangements in another time”) over an effects-laden acoustic and seemingly omnipresent bass that together hold down the melody. A soaring lead guitar veers into territory that can only be described as far out, man. In the second verse, Stevenson sings, “I never want to come down”. Put this track on repeat, and you’ll never have to.
“Candy Flip” will be released on 7” red vinyl 3 March as part of the Too Pure Singles Club.
