Spinning Coin's "Raining On Hope Street" is every bit as melancholic as its title suggests
Following on from last year's “Albany" / "Sides” 7inch debut for Geographic - continuing on the good form from 2015's self titled EP - Glasgow's Spinning Coin are back with a fine new single and video which draws a direct line back through the city's musical heritage.
The quartet have a sound which could only come from Scotland's largest city (and okay, the west coast of the United States) and it's clear they're steeped in the DIY culture which produced the likes of Orange Juice. Postcard Records and (recent touring partners) Teenage Fanclub. "Raining On Hope Street" is a miserable title based on one of Glasgow's most dispiriting streets, but there's magic in the song.
There's a glorious driving jangle of guitars central to "Raining On Hope Street", a surprising muscularity which contrasts against the lighter, fragile vocal harmonies of Sean Armstrong and Jack Mellin. As you hear the line "I'm giving away my heart" there's a typically Scottish duality at play; sure it's raining and I'm miserable on a grim street, but I'm here with you and it's going to be okay.
