There are very few upsides to a panic attack, and for most, despair and fear are the overriding emotions. But for some, including SPINN frontman Johnny Quinn, in the moments following intense anxiety comes clarity. And, in that clarity, Quinn found the inspiration for their newest single, “Outside Of The Blue”.
The title track from the band’s upcoming sophomore album is a bright indie song led by glittering guitar riffs and a refreshingly optimistic lyrical commentary on mental health. “Outside Of The Blue” skilfully navigates sensitive themes in a way that is not only uplifting but avoids invalidating the perhaps dissimilar feelings of others.
It is that careful balancing act that cements SPINN as the emotionally mature and remarkable lyricists they are.
Speaking of “Outside of the Blue”, Quinn explains, “Outside Of The Blue” is about battling anxiety and periods of depression, coupled with the redeeming powers of love and how it can help you get out of that sort of ‘blue’ world you find yourself living in sometimes.”
“It's about how appreciative you become of the good things in life when you realise you have them - and how you’d do anything for that.”
Offering a clear insight into the themes and sonics that will inform their upcoming album – tackling anxiety, depressions, love, and politics – the record is set to show SPINN in a new expressive and eloquent light without losing their indie-pop sheen.
