Sonia Stein gets over a ghosting on the understated "Party"
Sonia Stein isn't the first person to be ghosted, and she won't be the last, but I'd put good money on "Party" being one of the best songs out there about the experience.
Turning grief into gold in the wake of an abruptly ended two-month relationship, Stein's new track is a minimal 80s-influenced cut with an explosively dance-worthy chorus. Delicate staccato guitar lines weave across a bed of humming synths, with Stein's meandering, mournful vocal adding the bittersweet topnote. The yearning refrain – "I'm sorry I lied" – is a guaranteed slowburn of an earworm, bound to be ringing in your head for days after your first listen.
"'Party' is about wanting an explanation," Stein explains of the track's inspiration. "Wondering why someone would make such a big deal of something and let it go without feeling the need to say goodbye or explain. I was dealing with the humiliation and shock of having the rug pulled from under me and was imagining a metaphorical party I would host to commemorate what I thought was a memorable experience that I didn't feel was honoured."
Stein spent much of 2018 in the studio, wrapping the EP releases expected out later this year. She plays a live show at London's White City House on 5 February.
