Manchester’s Shunya constructs a kaleidoscope of electropop on “Wonder N Wane”
“Wonder N Wane” is the newest release from Manchester-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Shunya.
Shunya, whose real name is Alex Keary, has a richly varied musical background. The impact of Manchester’s thriving electronic scene combined with his own accomplishments as a classical violist and jazz bassist make for nuanced, highly-textured songwriting and production, blurring the lines between the genres his work draws upon.
“Wonder N Wane” is taken from Keary’s 2016 EP Mountain Gazer. Touches of scuzzy, distorted bass highlight the delicate intricacies of the overlying instrumentation - plucked strings and multi-tracked vocals that weave in and out of electronic blips. The full five minutes of “Wonder N Wane”’s play time brim with intriguing combinations of the track’s individual elements, layered over each other to build a gently shifting kaleidoscope of sound.
