Listen: Ships – “Space Inside” [Premiere]
Dublin duo Ships craft an indelible disco jam on new single “Space Inside”, premiering today on Best Fit.
Listening to “Space Inside” is like finding yourself at a party.
It is a party co-hosted by David Byrne and Daft Punk, so you must be a pretty cool person. You are surrounded by other, cooler people: Kanye West loudly pitches St. Vincent on a collaboration, Win Butler (Arcade Fire) challenges Julian Casablancas (The Strokes) to a one-on-one basketball game, and Paul Williams and Nile Rodgers stand in awe as Pharrell Williams’ hat passes, presumably carrying Pharrell beneath it. You follow James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem), wandering aimlessly until you both suddenly turn toward the sound of the house band. It starts with the incessantly groovy bass line. The cowbells chime in, and—wait, is that Nile playing guitar? No, no he and Paul are still over there talking about the Muppets, but he certainly could be playing guitar, that’s how smooth and funky this riff is. And then there are the synths, which, sure, are kind of goofy but my god do they work. By the time Sorca McGrath takes over vocal duties, the ballroom has erupted, and you lose track of everything: how long you’ve been dancing, who you’re dancing with. Finally, the music stops and, covered in sweat, you look up towards the stage:
“Thank you, that one’s called ‘Space Inside’, and we are Ships!”
The 7” single (also featuring “None Of It Real”) is out today via Berlin’s Stratosfear Recordings.
