She Makes War renovates "Slow Puncture" into a layered piece of atmospheric pop
Bristol's She Makes War - aka Laura Kidd - has is sharing the lead track from her upcoming Disarm:15 EP.
The EP celebrates five years since the release of her Disarm record, and reimagines some its enduring cuts. Kidd says of the premise: “I’ve played about 400 gigs since I recorded my first album, so I wanted to approach thesongs I’ve been touring for the last five years with a fresh perspective - I selected the ones that feel the most resonant to me now and the ones I knew would benefit most from a bit of wisdom and hindsight.”
"Slow Puncture" is one of those tracks being updated. The original, a fluttery acoustic track with gothic undertones, has been transformed. Stark textures and raw nerves have been smoothed into an atmospheric, layered descent into the rabbit hole. Chimes, keys, thundering guitars, and polished harmonies all orbit the track's emotive core, getting ever closer as the track unfolds, until everything connects and erupts in a powerful burst of noise - it's hard to say if one's 'better' than the other, but this 2015 version certainly packs an almighty punch.
Speaking about the track, Kidd says: "'Slow Puncture' is a sticking plaster song. You can keep convincing yourself everything is going to be okay and it will be, for a time... I’m very fond of it - when a lyric comes out so honest and vulnerable it feels uncomfortable to share that with strangers at first, but now I’ve sung it in hundreds of different rooms around the world I know it’s a song that brings me and the audience together. It even has some indie celebrity fans! Once you’ve recorded them songs take on a life of their own - this one has travelled the most and not just with me."
Disarm:15 is out 4 December via My Big Sister Recordings. She Makes War's next LP, Direction Of Travel, is slated for early 2016.
