Seattle's Valley Maker reveals atmospheric folk opus "Pretty Little Life Form" [Premiere]

21 September 2015, 16:15 | Written by Laurence Day

Seattle-based, South Carolina-raised troubadour Valley Maker - aka Austin Crane - is streaming new track "Pretty Little Life Form" on Best Fit.

The track features on upcoming debut long-player When I Was A Child, following well-received offerings like "Only Friend".

Composed and recorded across his native U.S.A. - and even further afield at points - the album tackles big topics like "life, love, and death, faith and doubt, time and space".

"Pretty Little Life Form" is the kind of methodical folk-pop ditty that recalls Bon Iver, City and Colour, William Fitzsimmons et al. - it's loose Americana, riddled with striking echoes, and agonised electric guitar licks. Crane's voice messily yearns through harmonies and misty instrumentation; he sounds vaguely desperate among the lethargic rhythms, and he sends shivers across your spine with the bittersweet riffery.

Speaking to Best Fit about the track, Valley Maker says:

'"Pretty Little Life Form' was one of the first songs I wrote in the collection that would become When I Was A Child. It occupies a central place in the record and is one that I always enjoy playing live with the band - for me, I think that's because, lyrically and dynamically, the song sort of creates its own world to inhabit for a few minutes. It came from a time in my life when I was living in a somewhat isolated manner and uncertain about what community and relationships would look like moving forward. Though life is different now, the song is still a good companion and a reminder that figuring out who we are in relation to movement and change is an ongoing process."

Brick Lane will release When I Was A Child on Friday, 25 September.
