LA purveyor of pop noir Saro is ambushed by new love on the disarming "Snowblind"

02 May 2019, 21:30 | Written by Pip Williams

With a vocal similar to Olly Alexander of Years & Years, but disarmingly left-field production, LA-based pop/R&B artist Saro is blazing a unique trail on new single "Snowblind".

"Snowblind" hits the listener like a shock to the system. It's difficult to categorise, falling close to the richly textured electronics of Sohn whilst invoking the same striking pop noir feel of Banks or POLIÇA. Despite its lyrics focusing on a new love, its skittering percussion and bleak, minimal arrangement craft more of an atmosphere of dread than of romance.

Saro is no stranger to dark topics, speaking openly about his experiences with racism and homophobia as a queer, biracial American. Debut EP In Loving Memory tackled the loss of a friend, with the catharsis spilling over to follow-up Boy Afraid.

Saro opens up about the message behind "Snowblind":

"There I was, thinking I was incapable of love, when a swift gust pushed me from the ledge, and I began to fall," he begins. "'Snowblind' is about love grabbing you by the throat right after you deny its existence. To be 'snowblind' is to be temporarily robbed of sight by the reflection of sunlight on snow. The 'ignorance is bliss' feeling and inability to see the good from the bad is how love begins – however temporary the sensation may be."

"Snowblind" is out 3 May.
