Sam Brookes finds a new sound with the sparse beauty of “My Girl Drinks Coffee”
Channelling the sparse synth and drum machine-led sounds of outfits like SOHN, London-based Sam Brookes shares latest offering “My Girl Drinks Coffee”.
Recorded in a boathouse on the Isle of Skye, “My Girl Drinks Coffee” is stark in its beauty, exploring the loss of daily routine following the end of a relationship.
“Breaking up with someone is not just about the lamenting of the loss of love,” Brookes explains of the track. “It’s also the awakening and realisation of this new, alien part of yourself, that has up until now been filled by another person. My mind was drawn to Kafka’s Metamorphosis,” he adds, explaining the line “I woke up on a bed of scales.”
“It had a been two years since my last release and a lot had happened to me in that time,” Brookes continues. “These events were the crest of a wave which led me to ‘My Girl Drinks Coffee’. Not only did I want to describe this alien feeling through lyrics and melody, but also sonically. I wanted a new sonic world in which to immerse these ideas, [so] I started experimenting with beats, tempo and guitar sounds with [production software] Ableton. […] I’m extremely proud of this song, every element of the track sums up how I was feeling at the time."
