"Citrus" is the titular track from Rnie’s forthcoming record, due for release next month.
Amid the hustle and bustle of modern life, there has become a growing need to be able to switch off and escape. Rnie, the dream-pop outfit from New York, make music that encourages you to turn inwards via a breeze of hazy, minor-key guitars and introspective, barely intelligible vocals.
On tracks such as “Homeroom” and “Tobacco”, also taken from the upcoming record, it’s proven to be a total dream. Thankfully, “Citrus” carries on in a similar vein.
All effects and mumbling, “Citrus” is therapeutic in its low-key performances and murmured lyrics. There are moments, however, when the band emerge from their hazy depths and add some glean to the track. The moments when the vocals stretch beyond their typical aesthetic to reflect a genuine yearning, or the when the guitars hit a harmony so sweet, you instantly catch yourself to make sure it doesn’t pass you by.
Stunning in their delivery, it’s these moments that confirm the depth of songwriting that Rnie suggested with their releases up to this point. More importantly, however, it’s these moments that add a sprinkling of dynamism to the slumbering beast, and make “Citrus” Rnie’s most immersive and impressive track to date.
