Personality Cult delivers an abrasive new wave track that's tailor-made for 2018
Personality Cult - or James Clifford as he is known outside of this whirlwind post-punk project - is an artist who employs harsh sounding drum machines with a new wave sensibility in such a way that works perfectly as a modern day ode to isolation and uncertainty.
"Loose Ends" is the second track to come from Personality Cult's upcoming, self-titled debut EP, and perfectly follows the driving sonic prowess of previously released single "Decay". Yet, whereas "Decay" had a certain glimmer of hope and light within its post-punk quality that felt like it could possibly find a home on a dancefloor, "Loose Ends" enters into darker, more dystopian territory.
It creeps with an underlying, repetitive motif that circles with a hypnotic quality, whilst Clifford's intriguing and wholly unique vocals act as a grounding platform in contrast to the meteoric, almost intergalatic-feeling guitars. It's otherworldly and at times disarming, but that's exactly why it works.
“I wanted all three tracks to have a deliberately f*cked-up sonic quality to them, but 'Loose Ends' especially so," Explains the LA-based artist of the the EP's evolution, "I love listening to old punk records where the recording quality is subpar but the energy is still so raw and powerful that you immediately forget about it. I was sort of shooting for that with this track as a way to parallel the lyrical content about uncertainty and not really knowing where you’re going to land in the long term.”
