Sweden's Oracle North embrace cold wave on stern new track "Underzone"
Following on from last year's Communion EP, Stockholm quartet Oracle North have released a brand new track brimful of moody gloom.
There are three obvious touchstones for Olov Andersson, Andreas Bygdell, Johan Wahlberg, and Lina Öhman on "Underzone"; there's the motorik beats of Krautrock, the post-punk industrialism of early Factory Records and the bleak confrontational attitude of Suicide, all of which combine to make this new Oracle North track a very direct, and unforgiving, experience.
"Underzone" is relentless; whether it's the electronic bleeps which introduce the track, the rudimentary low-end bassline or the flat, ominous vocals there's a real feeling of being drawn downwards, or even crushed by the weight of something unknowable. Existential anxiety made into a tangible physical presence, dogging your every step.
Yet the track bears repeated listens, those nagging instrumentals get right under your skin. "Underzone" is out today, and you can listen below.
