Only Total's "After Dark" is a subdued tale of unintentional love
Only Total, the project of Milo McNulty (formerly of Morning Smoke and Method Actress), is back with "After Dark", a mellow yet subdued song that embodies the frustration of falling for someone.
"After Dark" follows on from his previous sigles "Pure Pain" and "Faith", and sees London singer/songwriter McNulty continue his use of mellow instrumentals that ring with a similar nostalgic/faded element to Beach Fossils, Craft Spells and Wild Nothing.
Only Total's latest outing is a confessional one, directed at his unintentional love interest. He contemplates the legitimacy of the other person's love, before retracting into his shell to protect himself, as he sings, "Stay away / away from me."
The breezy melodies contrast with Only Total's lyrics, which speak of him never intending to "fall so far" for someone. He injects the chorus with more vocal power, belting out the song's title like he's yearning for authentic love.
His falsetto vocals are soothing, and portray the emotional turmoil of experiencing love when you're not planning, or wanting to have it.
