On its release day, Swedish star MIYNT discusses EP No. 1

16 September 2016, 10:15 | Written by Andrew Hannah

Today sees the release of the debut EP from Swedish singer MIYNT, helpfully titled EP No. 1

Featuring the singles "The Strangest Game" and "After the Gold Rush", MIYNT's first collection of songs finds her in more classic song writing territory than had been previously hinted at by a track like "Civil War", and promises great things.

We caught up with MIYNT on release day to find out a bit more about EP No. 1 - and you can also stream the full record below.

Hi MIYNT, it's been over a year since "Civil War" and "Nick Drake" so are you happy to have your first EP finally out there?

Yes I’m very happy, a year is a long time.

The EP feels like a progression and a development of your sound since those songs, to maybe more of a classic pop and rock sound - was that intentional and if so what led to it?

Yes and no. It was intentional by my subconscious. I think that one of the most amazing things about making music is that it can sound like anything. You have the freedom to do whatever you want and before a song exists it doesn’t exist and then it does. I feel like I’m developing all the time in terms of songwriting and music making and along with that I want to explore new things. Making an EP/album feels like a timeline. You start at some point but you might not be or sound the same in the end and the music might take different directions during that time. This was the result of that.

You've named songs after Nick Drake and a Neil Young album...is this just a coincidence?

I guess I listened a lot to old rockdudes growing up (alongside the Spice Girls) and that they somehow became a big inspiration and influence in my own approach to songwriting. I also like writing songs with a clear theme - decide the title and then write the lyrics, for example.

What you can you tell us about the EP's themes; is there something which links the tracks?

The themes are not very happy, but some are a bit hopeful.

Who or what influenced the EP...were you listening to certain artists, reading particular books etc?

I’ve been spending most of this last year listening to my own music, I´ve been listening to a lot of music and explored a lot of art in my life but I felt like in order for me to concentrate and understand exactly what I wanted to do I sometimes have to shut down.

What's next for MIYNT in 2016...will there be an album to follow or does the EP title mean you'll continue to release EPs for now?

I’m working at something that is taking shape right at this moment, it looks like an album...

MIYNT's EP No. 1 is out now.
