Nashville artist Grumpy does her best on new single "Space Cadet"
Towing an optimistic line into the depths of relationship hope, Grumpy, real name Mason Schmitt, toys with her idiosyncrasies on new tune "Space Cadet".
Hailing from Nashville, you’d be forgiven for placing Grumpy in a SoCal pigeon hole, or even a Pacific Northwest flannel shirt. Her tunes are all blissed out harmonies over striding and melodic grunge guitar.
Playing live as a five-piece, the project is led by Mason Schmitt, who poses for press shots in a multitude of colours and with a cute dog. Her music is equally as colourful and twee, mixing self-deprecation with honesty and raw vulnerability.
On "Space Cadet", Schmitt laments her frame of mind and the impact it often has on her personal relationships. “I just wanna do my best, this is what you’re in for, for the rest of this partnership, which I hope never ends. Because I’m sometimes a mess, and when I’m with you I feel like I’m the best.” The lulling melody lifts an all too real sentiment into something hopeful and positive.
Drawing inspiration from Frankie Cosmos and The Beths, she’s also picked up comparisons to the likes of Snail Mail and Jessica Pratt. She’ll release her debut record Loser in March via Acrophase Records.
