Mystic Peach hold up a mirror to small-mindedness on "Wanna Be My Daddy?"
Southampton trio Mystic Peach's unhinged third single "Wanna Be My Daddy?" is a claustrophobic banger.
"Wanna Be My Daddy?" sees unhinged psych collide with The Cure’s suburban drone to create a claustrophobic, sincere and aggressive meditation on sexuality in small-town England.
Mystic Peach's vocalist and guitarist Curtis Gale’s vocals are gale-force winds of their own, smashing through waves of sound with an accelerating menace while the grungy riff antes up worryingly like the most earnest of poker bluffs, daring you to call it out.
Jimi Allen’s drums follow suit, contorting insidiously from gentle fills and strokes to monstrous tidal crashes, all the while, the unsettling question is posed by Gale to those who look on "Wanna Be My Daddy?"
Gale explains the force that propels the track forward and the origin of the rhetorical title, saying it’s a story of experience about “how the comfort in your own sexuality can be threatening to certain people. Small town mentality, prying eyes and assumptions giving rise to the purest form of irony… When people go out of their way to make sure you know, what are you meant to do? I guess this shows how I feel. Do you want to tease me? Do you want me to feel vulnerable for you? Do you want to be my Daddy? It's tiresome. Long story short, it’s uncomfortable questions for uncomfortable men."
In the shadow of the echoing question and ricocheting grunge riff, the abrasive song culminates in a captivating climax that shifts and shutters like a fairground house of mirrors, the band retorting in a way that crumbles the pathetic panopticon that the small-town psyche presides in. A subversive, ballsy and brilliant blast.
