Liverpool’s Motherhood release cowbell-heavy call-to-arms “You Can Be Lonely If You Want”
The message behind Motherhood’s debut single is pretty simple - “It’s about being single, and hating it!” lyricist and lead vocalist Evan Torrente laughs.
“I wrote it with the mindset that you call someone bitter, but the bitter one is obviously [you]! It’s showing how you can become a dick when you’re single, which is unfortunately a boat that I’m still in!”
Despite the song’s bleak outlook on life, “You Can Be Lonely If You Want” is an effervescent earworm, reminiscent of Two Door Cinema Club’s early releases. It’s a fun, fast-paced call-to-arms for all the singletons in the world.
“It’s a statement of intent,” explains drummer Ed Juniper. He describes the track as “A three-minute pop song that’s got some pretty ridiculous synthesisers in there - and cowbell!”
Juniper and Torrente met at university, piecing the rest of the band together from there. Now a four-piece, their DIY approach has seen them filming videos and holding launch parties in their living room in the lead-up to the first live appearance.
