Motherhood lament the modern dating experience on upbeat new track "Clueless"
On a mission to invoke the guitar-led nonchalance of early records from The Strokes, Liverpool lads Motherhood share sophomore single “Clueless”.
“It’s about Tinder, and dating in 2017,” explains lyricist Evan Torrente, of the jangly, toe-tapping cut. For a song containing the lyric “I guess I’m gonna die alone,” it’s certainly surprisingly upbeat. “It’s about how menial the whole texting thing is, and how modern dating is hard! I’m quite a romantic.”
“Evan [wants to] write letters - with a quill! - to all his potential suitors!” interjects band member Ed Juniper, laughing.
“Or do the whole boombox thing outside the window,” Torrente adds.
“We did a Sofar Sounds session in London and this went down almost as a comedy song," Juniper continues. "Evan introduced it like, ‘We’re Motherhood, this song’s called “Clueless” and it’s about Tinder!’ You get to the bridge, and giggling erupts… hopefully with us! It’s the closest to pseudo-comedy we do!
"The next song’s about Bumble,” they joke, before signing off. Whilst they might not have been entirely serious, we’d listen to a track about LinkedIn if it was as infectiously buoyant as this one.
