Listen: Rhodes - "Morning"

12 May 2014, 15:45 | Written by Shea Corrigan

One would think minimal and expansive were a contradiction in terms, but Hertfordshire songwriter David Rhodes proves otherwise once again on the latest from his forthcoming sophomore EP, Morning.

Cognisant of his musical talent for little more than a year when he “discovered” that he could sing last January, Rhodes shows no signs of slowing down. Yet “Morning” is anything but fast-paced; soaring? Sure. All-encompassing? Definitely. But with solemn vocals entwined perfectly with rolling drums and an unwavering guitar pattern, the EP’s title track is the definition of slow burn. Full of emotion and angst, in the best possible way, “Morning” ebbs and flows on the back of Rhodes’ decidedly serious and earnest tone.

With production help from Ian Grimble (Daughter) and the Tim Bran/Roy Kerr duo (London Grammar) – a veritable murderers’ row of masterful melancholy – the 11 May EP release promises more heart-wrenching emotion. Summertime sadness, indeed.

Morning EP is out on 11 May.
