Swedish quartet Melby breathe some life into psych pop with the effortlessly rolling "Cross"
Hailing from Stockholm, Melby are releasing just their third single but already the four-piece are looking like ones to watch.
Led by Matilda Wiezell (vocals, synth) and completed by Are Engen Steinsholm (guitar), David Jehrlander (bass) and Teo Jernkivst (drums), Melby make psychedelic pop music. It's an overcrowded genre but the Stockholmers stand out thanks to Wiezell's blissful vocals.
Over a chiming, winding riff which recalls some of Dungen's lighter moments, Wiezell delivers a laconic, cooing vocal which gives "Cross" a practically horizontal vibe. There's a touch of Cate Le Bon to the singer's lower register tones, and when a wandering organ solo cuts into the track halfway through it renders the whole thing a touch otherworldly, and wholly brilliant.
