Canary frontman Matthew Kenneally reveals debut intricate solo offering, “Would You Do It Again?”
Although sweet and solemn aren’t often used in the same sentence, it provides the perfect contradiction that Canary frontman Matthew Kenneally has revealed in his first solo offering “Would You Do It Again?”.
The Melbourne-based singer-songwriter uses a beautifully simple melody, fronted by little else than his acoustic guitar. Faultlessly moving between soft sounds, Kenneally builds up his tranquil track by adding soothing strings.
The solemn tones are a little reminder of why people enjoy the likes of Elliott Smith and Sufjan Stevens. The delicate tiptoe of the melodic phrases adds a lonesome lullaby feel, intricately finding warmth amongst the beautiful strings.

Speaking about the track, Kenneally said, “It is about the irrationality of love. It is about the sweetness that can be found in the pain of longing, and jealousy. It is about the bittersweet knowledge that you will probably still make the same decisions in the future."
The hushed vocals of Kenneally reiterate the beauty in simplicity, dwelling shortly on higher notes while elongating the delicate plucks of the standalone guitar.
