Markland Starkie launches his new project Carriages with the video for "Canavarel" [Premiere]
Once upon a time Bristol-based Markland Starkie recorded a bunch of terribly undervalued albums as Sleeping States, signing to Bella Union in the process and subsequently being unforgivably ignored by the heartless record-buying public.
Despite having not released a Sleeping States album since 2009’s In the Gardens of the North, Starkie has not given up making excellent music and with the help of Ben Owen and Mark Simms he’s moved on to launch his new three-piece Carriages. Like a cross between the theatrical hardcore of Dischord’s Shudder to Think, the unique, rule-breaking vocal gymnastics of Sue Tompkins from Life Without Buildings (another lost and underrated band) and some straight-up classic indie rock, Starkie’s new band released the Canavarel EP back in January on Bandcamp and it’s every bit as good as those ingredients suggest.
While Carriages work away on their album, we’re proud to present the premiere of the video for “Canavarel”, the lead track from this year’s debut EP. A simple-yet-effective clip, Starkie is foregrounded as if to highlight his wondrous singing ability while pixelated band members get to work in the background.
