Listen: Marika Hackman – “Itchy Teeth”
Marika Hackman has already been compared to Joanna Newsom but such comparisons are rarely fair to either artist.
For emerging artists to be compared with those that have already worked so hard to be established is mildly insulting to the original, while at the same time, making the comparison would involve pushing aside Hackman’s wholly unique and haunting vocals that shine through on this new track “Itchy Teeth”.
The track follows the recent airing of “Cinnamon” which leads her new EP Sugar Blind further teasing the record that won’t fully land until 9 December. Produced by Charlie Andrew, who also helmed Alt-J’s An Awesome Wave, there is a similar minimal quality, but with an extra sheen and soulfulness that is all Hackman’s own.
“Itchy Teeth” builds further on previous record The Iron Taste, but this time the soaring vocal sits ever more comfortably amongst her uniquely atmospheric and guitar-shimmered backdrop. Hackman has produced more of the same here, but with a bar she’s already set so high that’s a damn good thing and it’s only a matter of time before she’s the aspired-to one in new music reviews.
