In case you hadn’t already noticed, the unseen arbiters of cool have declared the 90s are back. We’ve had a resurgence of girl bands (Juce, Neon Jungle et al.) and you can’t hear a pop song without choking on RnB references, while Iggy Azalea’s Clueless-themed video for “Fancy” has slathered the trend across just about every media outlet going. In the midst of the fray are rising London three-piece M.O who’ve just signed a publishing deal with Universal in the US, putting them on the same roster as James Fauntleroy and Future.
Their previous drop, the fabulously lush club cut “For a Minute”, lay on some of the finest beats this side of Amerie’s “1 Thing”, and on new single “Dance On My Own” they’ve unashamedly embraced their throwback sound by sampling Sweet Female Attitude’s “Flowers” - one of the biggest hits to come out of the UK garage scene. The girls have duly repurposed the track in a way that retains its frenetic charm - beats, “woah baby"s and all - and instilled it with the intricately woven sonic touches we’ve come to expect from their oeuvre. Waterfall harmonies are layered above saccharine string riffs, and there are the usual lyrical tropes about the careless lover who “left me standing on my own/never thought you’d be that cold”.
In many ways we’re treading familiar ground: M.O are not breaking musical boundaries. That being said you can’t help but be swayed by the almost hyperactive force of their aural onslaught. This song will stick in your head, it will make you dance, and you are going to want to spend your summer playing it on repeat.
“Dance On My Own” is released on 17 August via Operator Records.
