Loula crystallises vulnerability into pop perfection on "Darkness Falls"

31 January 2019, 10:30 | Written by Pip Williams

"Darkness Falls", the new single from Loula, is emotive electro-pop in the vein of fellow 80s-influenced artists St. Lucia and Anna of the North.

Loula's background as a competent yet self-taught musician shines in her magpie-like ability to collect key elements from a range of genres to construct her own engaging track. Childhood mastery of piano, guitar, saxophone, and drums provides a foundation to support her more recent foray into singing; one that pays off at every turn. "Darkness Falls" opens with warm synths and muted guitar, blooming into an expansive chorus at the behest of her commanding vocal.

"Sometimes you feel like you’re stuck. You started caring about someone and you want to know where you guys are going," Loula explains of the single. "There are these words you really want to say to this person, show your feelings, but no matter how hard you try, you can’t get these words out of your mouth. Being vulnerable in front of someone you care for is scary as shit. If only we could be invisible for a moment. Just a dark space so nobody is able to see you struggling. To make it a little lighter and let the darkness fall."

A Spotify playlist of Loula's favourites hints as to how her sound is so classic, yet perfectly on-trend. The collection favours of-the-moment storytelling popstars alongside bona-fide legends such as Tracy Chapman and Michael Jackson. It's a masterclass in songwriting able to encapsulate specific feelings and crystallise them into pop perfection.

"Darkness Falls" is out now.
