Lola Moon channels an alien Lana Del Rey on "Those Beautiful Boys"
Lyrically avant-garde and musically ethereal, “Those Beautiful Boys”, the debut single from Berlin-based artist Lola Moon (aka 20-year-old Lauren Talbot) explores the relentless chase for perfection over a sumptuous meeting of pulsing electronics and lush orchestration.
The topic is well-worn, but Talbot avoids millennial clichés with her careful lyricism and delivery – the song’s allusions to social media, weight loss and skincare regimes, delivered in careful, clipped vocals, sound like descriptions of a world understood through symbols and screens rather than lived experience. It's as though David Bowie’s Thomas Newton in The Man Who Fell to Earth were a 20-year-old woman, coming to terms with her body and soul on a new planet. In the chorus, Talbot switches the focus from reflections on herself to observations of others – the descriptions of the titular beautiful boys (in blue jeans, no less) over melancholy swells of strings bringing to mind a stranger, alien Lana Del Rey.
