Sun Girls, a side-project of indie-rock group The Magic Gang, have released their debut track, “Crocodile”. A blissed-out, funky two-step that rolls along like a summer evening stroll in Sideways Park: the psychedelic, colour-splashed cousin of New York’s Central.
The brain-child of Brighton boys Kristian Smith and Paeris Giles sees a change in direction from the indie-rock à la Jake Bugg of The Magic Gang’s recent releases. Instead, “Crocodile” combines soporific, soothing guitar riffs drenched in reverb, with laid-back, baggy, stoner-beats and a tranquilisingly gentle yet indelible bassline. Heartfelt and hypnotic lead vocals evoke images of late-70s Supertramp, whilst the boys add their own best effort at a Beach Boys impression in some blissfully melancholic chantings which backup the lead.
All in all, “Crocodile” is a perfect revival of 90s psych-rock, tinged with elements of beat-era pop, oodles of beach-funk, topped off with some of the lads’ own feel for dreamy, spaced out guitar balladry.
