Listen: Soap&Skin – Me And The Devil
Austrian experimental electro postergirl Soap&Skin announced the latest addition to her darkly alluring repertoire – the Sugarbread EP – earlier this week. The three-track record includes this rather unnerving interpretation of American guitar icon Robert Johnson’s ‘Me And The Devil’.
Anja Plaschg’s feverish vocal darts across a canvas of post-industrial drum rolls and tinkling organ, frantically crying out “You may bury my body, down by the highway side”. The original composition is practically beyond recognition with aching stabs of synth strings enriching the song with a propulsive kick. It takes a precocious talent to twist and warp the work of a Blues legend into a jarringly provocative slice of Über-modern electronica with any success. Naturally Soap&Skin is one of the few acts capable of breaking the mould.
