Back in the day we used to call music like that of Nicolas Jaar “Intelligent Dance Music”, until we realised how stupid that sounds. But alas, the NY-based producer does seem like a rather clever chap and his tastes is something that never falter.

Which is why this BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix makes for such a compelling listen. It’s very much a varying and eclectic affair, with Jaar himself rubbing shoulders with some straight up electronica in the form of Aphex Twin, Pearson Sound and The Field, with the likes of Jay-Z, Bill Callahan and even *NSYNC thrown in for good measure.
