Brainlove man Mat Riviere sure does have an almost masochistic knack of producing beautifully pained alt-pop songs, nearly as much as we take a sadistic pleasure in hearing them.
‘Shores’, a new track uploaded just yesterday, starts slow with the unravelling of what sounds like a jewellery box winding in reverse, accompanied by a piano part and glock bits of fittingly juvenile simplicity.
The vocals top and lap each other, like the mournful voices of childhood friends echoing through an empty attic.
It comes to an unhinged climax as the wheels derail, static and feedback blurring Riviere’s dour tones, before fading to a sombre and reflective resolve.
The song is currently available via the musician’s Soundcloud, along with a collection of more new tracks – including our very own SOTD #282 ‘Coal’.
