Listen: Jackson Scott – That Awful Sound
Jackson Scott is a singer/songwriter, but one more in the mould of Jeff Mangum’s Neutral Milk Hotel, or more specifically Bradford Cox with his Atlas Sound mask on.
The Asheville, North Carolina resident claims to hate singer/songwriters and professes no real knowledge of any developments in indie either recent or historical. I like the guy, but he’s a liar – clearly, on the evidence of ‘The Awful Sound’, he’s suitably clued up enough in both respects. Plus, he has a name that looks like it’s been on the front cover of Classic Rock magazine a hundred times, so, the guy’s on solid ground.
‘That Awful Sound’ spends its two and a half minutes building in your ears an enviable haze, hurried along by propulsive acoustic guitars and electric ones duelling with noises that’ll have you removing your earphones and wondering whether the squall is coming from somewhere else entirely. That seems to be Scott’s ‘thing’, admirably – sounds you think you know, yet that feel like they’re coming from a place that you don’t.
