Born in Berlin, HQ Handy is the pseudonym for a new collaboration between producer BifiBoy and vocalist Magicisland. Like most music evolving out of Berlin over the past twenty years, “Waen” is an exciting track with a style that can be a little difficult to put a finger on. Is it ambient? Is it chill-wave? Or could it possibly be dream-pop?
Instead, the track fits into its own category. It’s relaxed and chilled out, but carries its quirks in the form of church-like organs, extra-terrestrial soundscapes and a gorgeous full-bodied voice courtesy of Magicisland. Unlike the city known for techno and long lines at Berghain, “Waen” explores a fuller range of sound that takes pride in its unconventional oddness, and in the end manages to wear its flamboyant colours well. “Waen” is out now.
