Listen: Frank Ocean – Blue Whale
Just last night, I threw a listening party of Frank Ocean’s latest album Channel Orange with my brother, solely focussed on making him love the record as much as I do. It was very nearly a “If you don’t, then you’re no sibling of mine” kind of deal.
If he didn’t quite come away wanting to listen to ‘Sweet Life’ or ‘Pink Matter’ on repeat from now until iPods cease, then this might just about seal it – with Ocean dropping a new track on his Tumblr over the past couple of hours. ‘Blue Whale’ is probably the most rap-leaning – albeit still rather self-reflective – thing we’ve heard from the normally falsetto-ed smoothster, sounding more like the Earl Sweatshirt slow jam realm of matters.
A particular lyrical gem comes near the start in the form of: “If I ever have a daughter, I wonder what I could call her. 9 months after fucking on the beach, well I guess I’ll call her Karma.”
