Listen: Fine Print - "About You"
It is a fact much acknowledged by those with sense and taste that there are shamefully few saxophone solos in modern music. Thankfully for those of you needing a little more woodwind in your lives, we’ve found this spectacularly understated debut cut from mysterious Londoner Fine Print, “About You”.
Aside from the solo, which is thrown in at the end and leaves the song with something of an eighties vibe, it’s a full on piece of pure 2k14 pop-electronica. Think synths, stuttering beats, and the requisite casual vocal: we don’t know who Fine Print is yet, but he’s certainly got the year’s main musical trend down-pat.
What’s perhaps most interesting about the track is its use of altered dynamics and tempos, suggestive of an artist who’s remarkably adept at building a sound: it’s a very very accomplished first release, struck through with emotion and ripping techniques off a host of genres, from House to RnB. It comes as something of a shame to have so few details about the artist, especially considering the quality of “About You”.
We’ve reached a point where it feels like there’s been a relentless string of ‘anonymous’ artists of late, and as a marketing exercise, it’s getting slightly tired. Let’s hope it’s only a matter of time before Fine Print relinquishes his secrecy, and if it were to accompany a few more tracks like this one, that wouldn’t hurt either.
