Recalling moments of Knives Don’t Have Your Back, the album released by Metric / Broken Social Scene vocalist Emily Haines back in 2006 – Brooklyn based songwriter Eddi Front has emerged with one of the most effecting ballads of the year so far. Although bleak in context, there’s something almost comforting about ‘Gigantic’ – the traumatised tale of a divorce or a relationship breaking down is never an easy one to listen to, but here – sountracked by skeletal piano and Front’s lilting vocal – it almost feels like there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, as if Front is shedding the last remnants of a pained relationship: “I’ll get out of this hole, take my ring off”. The sound of a new dawn and the hope that can often emerge from tortuous circumstances. A spectacular debut.
