Foxygen drummer, Shaun Fleming, has embarked on a new solo project, Diane Coffee, with ‘Hymn’ being the first track to emerge off his debut LP, My Friend Fish.
‘Hymn’ is the remarkable product of two weeks spent locked away in his Manhattan bedroom with little more than a detuned guitar, half a drum kit and his iPhone to hand. The muffled vocals, bluesy guitar, humming organ and tambourine glows irresistibly with 60s influences, but at two minutes in, Fleming unleashes a powerful, upbeat, underground rock ‘n’ roll chorus, billowing with cigarette smoke, and positive energy. The rugged psychedelia of Foxygen is neither muted, nor replicated in carbon copy. This is truly distinctive stuff.
‘Hymn’ is up for download via SoundCloud with My Friend Fish pencilled in for a 29 October release on Western Vinyl.
