Listen: Death Rattle – Fortress [Best Fit Premiere]
Comprised of Helen and Chris Hamilton – contributing corrosive vocals and deep, industrial soundscapes respectively – gothic pop pair Death Rattle release their new record Fortress via Frontal Noize today and we’re excited (and mildly spooked) to present the darkly billowing title track here at Best Fit.
The London duo flirted with stylized, introverted song structures similar to The Knife and Zola Jesus on their 2012 debut EP HE&I. Death Rattle return to plumb those ever-so-slightly chastening atmospherics once again on ‘Fortress’. An ominously repeating sequencer motif melds with the distant cracking of warehouse beats and a yearning string section; Helen’s haunting vocals and scorned lyrics – ‘I think of the island/That we’ll never be’ – making scalpel-like incisions all the while. Immaculate production values help to shepherd their bold instrumental experiments into safer waters; less prog for prog’s sake, more Lynchian-grade dystopian opera.
