Listen: Deap Vally – Gonna Make My Own Money
Lindsey Troy and Julie Edwards, South California residents, go by the name of Deap Vally and make noisy, brilliantly raw rock n roll. Since they gate-crashed our musical sphere a couple of months back, we’ve been desperate to hear more. Tales of legendary live shows countered by biographical claims that they met in a needlework class sometime in 2011 are as intriguing as they are bizarre.
‘Gonna Make My Own Money’ is one hell of a solid positioning statement , both lyrically and musically. Troy’s ferocious-but-lilting vocal and Sabbath-tinged riffs rip a perfectly concentric, beautiful hole through the entire song. We haven’t seen Deep Vally live yet but we’ll be front and centre when they hit London for a show at The Old Blue Last next month (11 July) before appearances at all the big festivals this summer.
