New Jersey duo Crozet have somehow flown (criminally) under our radar until now, but that has all changed upon hearing their latest release “Hold My Weight”. The single—part of a compilation released in December through Synth Records—is a blast from future past, combining retro elements and modern touches for a finished product that would feel equally at home on a John Hughes soundtrack as on a Jersey Live stage.
Singer John Helmuth’s vocals stay low in the mix throughout behind layers of clean, propulsive drums. A roiling synth line becomes almost percussive, keeping the melody and allowing a reverb-tinged guitar (the real star of this song, with loving respect to all other instruments) to soak through in vital moments.
