Listen: Brolin – Portland

Double Denim gem, Brolin, is one of the more acerbic performers of recent years, swaggering along next to the likes of Ellery Roberts in terms of concentrated, menacing cool.
After executing ‘Reykjavik’ with icy finesse, latest track ‘Portland’ feels like a wholly different beast, with guest producers Peaking Lights stripping the arrangement right back to spartan basics, little more than loping bass, skeletal beats and spongy programmed blips. Bobbing along, following the meter of a sinister nursery rhyme, the Yorkshire native drawls, ‘sunshine, you should waste your time better,’ with the dead-eyed calm of a man whose orders we’re strangely compelled to follow.
