Listen: Ben Sommers – Sapien Express
David Bowie. There, I’ve said it now. I know it’s always a bit cheapening to make some easy comparison to such a hugely influential artist from old but sometimes it’s just completely unavoidable.
It’s like calling Viva Brother an “Oasis cover band covering The Beatles”. Although they would probably take that as the compliment that it was never intended as.
Not like being compared to ol’ Ziggy is ever a bad thing. ‘Sapien Express’ is taken from new album Avocado Chip by Londoner Ben Sommers and it’s a track that’s as weird and delicious as that culinary combination sounds.
The song is a theatrical and brooding odyssey of pitch-bending electronica and drums that sound like a tribe from the future. As the press release reads:
‘Avocado Chip is a place; a state of mind; a dark vision of villains; political axe-wielders; Stepford wives, husbands, sons and daughters; con men and women; evil deeds and all manner of shenanigans, fully realised with consummate poetic vision and gloriously melodic panache.’
Hard to get more Bowie than that.
