Late Verlane invigorates the modern piano ballad with his alt-pop introduction “Poolside”
Swedish multi-instrumentalist Late Verlane (aka Viktor Persson), layers his androgynous vocals with soothing alt-pop sounds to form a sophisticated, soft-hued number on “Poolside”.
A recent Future Classics signee (Flume, SOPHIE), Late Verlane has unveiled the glorious “Poolside” ahead of his debut EP. Built upon a soothing piano melody and intertwining a futuristic guitar lead, “Poolside” sees Late Verlane draw on his '70s influences, creating an invigorating modern piano ballad. Amalgamating warm tones with incredibly nostalgic emotions, the track is an intricately intimate debut from the singer-songwriter.
Playing all the instruments himself, Persson wrote the track out of a fear of falling in love, and keeping cards close to his chest. He describes it as about “seeing love as a fantasy that is unreachable, keeping the drive in you moving forward.”
“I wrote it on my parents' piano, which I’ve played since I was 10, whilst I was visiting them in Gothenburg," he explains. "My idea with this song was to experiment with the intimate and familiar feeling of writing something in your parents' house and turning it into something more adventurous and otherworldly.”
