Jojee ditches the laid-back feel on brass-tinged pop cut “Poison Fruit”
Pop songstress Jojee ditched a career in fashion to turn her attention to music, and if new track “Poison Fruit” is any indicator, her decision seems to be paying off.
“Poison Fruit” is the first cut from Jojee’s forthcoming sophomore EP, following debut release Low Key last year. Teased on social media with a time-lapse video of a decaying banana (because, of course), it’s a confident slice of bass-heavy pop. The singer’s unmistakably rich vocal is punctuated throughout by an emphatic brass section. It’s quite a departure from the laid-back feel of its predecessors, but the sonic progression marks out a clear and determined path for what’s to come.
"I went through a bit of a rough patch in both my personal life and with my music,” Jojee explains, of the time the track came into being. “Writing ‘Poison Fruit’ was like turning over a new leaf. Not only was I able to get the sour emotions I'd been feeling out, but it brought me back to the roots of why I began songwriting. I would say this is Chapter One in my new book."
