Guetta collaborator Jaymes Young freshens the love-as-a-drug metaphor with "Stoned on You"
After a handful of EPs and high-profile collaborations with Phoebe Ryan and David Guetta, American singer-songwriter Jaymes Young makes what feels like his first big statement with “Stoned on You”.
The new track is a paean to the thrills of new love, with a lyrical sharpness hidden in layers of laid-back synths. Young brings freshness to the familiar love-as-a-drug metaphor, with references to codeine and getting high enlivened by the sexy physicality of lines like “rubbing my bones on you” and “nothing else burns like you”. This lyrical drama is offset by Young’s mellow vocals, floating over skittering beats and the unexpected fuzzy guitar crunches of the chorus.
"Stoned On You"'s low-key electro-R’n’B feel is reminiscent of the lazy, sunny vibes of Khalid, or Kevin Garrett’s more upbeat moments, and feels custom-built to complement hazy spring afternoons.
