
JAKL’s “Shadows” is nostalgic folk songwriting at its best
If you’re looking for something like you’ve never heard before, “Shadows” isn’t the track for you. If, however, you’re looking to be swaddled in the all-encompassing warmth of a fantastic modern folk song, look no further.
“Shadows” sees JAKL drawing on the work of several singer-songwriter peers in pursuit of the perfect folk track, and it has to be said, he’s getting pretty damn close. With a lyrical flair that steers clear of the fatal tweeness that so often ruins an otherwise decent track, the London-based musician employs a well-balanced blend of acoustic instrumentation to support his compelling vocal performance.
JAKL’s words on the track come from the same mysteriously charismatic place as his lyrics: “When you can't see the light, the shadows are our only comfort. Everything that has gone wrong, everything that can no longer happen is hidden in the darkness.”
There’s something oddly heartening in this observation, which, much like his music, will leave you with plenty to ponder long after the final note has died away.
