Jagga has gone from having a mini crisis of faith – which lead to a parting of ways with his label, a major no less, at the turn of the year – to turning out two of the strongest, most diverse tunes of 2013 in ‘Out of Control’ and now ‘Hold Me’.
Where the first one’s orchestral composition – it’s all synth strings and plunging atmospherics – recalls post-dub, post-Blake throbs we’re thoroughly accustomed to now, new track ‘Hold Me’ toes a different line. Discordant clanks and pitched-up breaks pair with a steadily oozing bassline to form the backbone of a distinctive groove, while Jagga’s wild-eyed and effortless delivery drives the melody on through chorus and verse.
It seems scattered in structure but he’s never in danger of losing focus; he’s relaxed, and confident, finally expressing his art in the way it was intended to be all along.
