Fall through space and time with Danish trio IRAH on their astonishing debut "Into Dimensions"
If ever there was an advert for a change of scenery providing much needed inspiration, it might well be soundtracked by the incredible, epic debut single from IRAH.
This brand new Danish trio signed to Tambourhinoceros and made up of singer Stine Grøn, Adi Zukanović on synths and Oliver Laumann on drums were frustrated enough by their Copenhagen base to take a trip to Berlin to get the creative juices flowing. There, at the Funkhaus - the former East German broadcasting corporation - the band slowly formed their first single "Into Dimensions" out of an hour-long improvisational jam. And it's mind-blowing.
"Into Dimensions" feels almost structureless, a loose-limbed contemporary dance of a song which begins with gentle synth pulses and jazz percussion, the formation of a barest rhythm. There's elements of early Portishead in the sensuous groove but any thoughts of the track easing into simple beats are removed once Stine Grøn starts to sing. A coo which begins as a knowingly intimate whisper transforms into a soaring, untethered being which refuses to be kept down by gravity.
As the song reaches an astonishingly layered crescendo, Grøn sings of galaxies, freedom and falling, her voice becoming double and triple-tracked and impossible to untangle from the musical unity created by her band mates. If a piece of music could recreate what it might feel like to fall through space and time, to defy conventions and staid thought then it would sound like "Into Dimensions".
