Inner Tongue finds clarity with delicate pop ballad "Teeth"
After being forced to remain silent following a diagnosis of a rare vocal cord disorder, Vienna-based artist Inner Tongue had to dig deep and readdress his standing as an artist.
Out of this period of self-reflection, however, was born a new sound and way of looking at things, as the artist explains the revelation that this eventually gave way to, saying "Have you ever had a brief moment of clarity that lets you see things from a different perspective? When that vision has slipped away, all that's left is a feeling. I was chasing to reproduce one such feeling with this."
"Teeth" is the result of this epiphany, a tender song that is seeped in warmth and delicate interweaving textures. It has an attractive strangeness and unpredictability, where it takes the basic bare bones of a more conventional pop ballad and turns it upside down, where the added synth touches and Inner Tongue's manipulated vocals make it rise into a wholly new creation. It twinkles and gleams with pure pop clarity and is endlessly interesting, where upon something new comes to light with every listen.
"I hid myself in total silence in my apartment; I was totally depressed, and refused to write any music," describes Inner Tongue of the creation of the track itself, "so I decided to modify my musical focus temporarily by writing songs which could produce a melodic tension without vocals, but which featured the traits of forward-looking pop music. It was as if someone had pressed a reset button on the musical identity I had of myself."
The magical track is taken from Inner Tongue's forthcoming debut album, entitled Favours, which is due to be released on 18 May.
