HQFU unveils two brand new tracks, listen to the electro stomper A-side "Poison"

12 January 2017, 12:45 | Written by Andrew Hannah

Glasgow-based artist and musician Sarah J Stanley released her debut album as HQFU less than twelve months ago, but she's already back with two brand new tracks.

With "Poison", Stanley's HQFU has taken the sound of her debut album to the next logical place by creating a dark club anthem with just the right amount of subversion and self-loathing.

Over an initial gentle electronic buzz, Stanley sings "everything is poison / that we put into our mouths / don't let restraint / keep me from my home / all poison's the same...at least concoct your own". That can't beat 'em, join 'em attitude is soundtracked with nagging synth claps and a throbbing beat, various bleeps and boops, and a terrific blaring 808 outtro that's an intense joy to behold.

Stanley conducted an interview with herself to tell us a bit more about the track. You can read that, and watch a terrific lyric video featuring a lot of Rich Tea biscuits and icing....

Tell me something about the track "Poison", Sarah J Stanley?

"You never quite know how a song will work live until you perform it, then you get an idea of whether something was better than you thought, or shitter than you hoped. ‘Poison’ marginally exceeded my expectations in that it kept my interest longer than I anticipated. Boredom; my relentless antagonist.’"

What’s it about?

"We’re all dying all the time and we might as well get on with it in our own way, seeing as there’s very little control we have over anything. We’re junkies whether we like it or not. We can’t change the world. We’re alone. I think it’s stupid when people try and tell people how they are to prioritise and organise their health when everyone is just scrambling about trying to cope with being outside the only comfort of the womb, which is now sadly just a grieving memory. Anyway, the lyrics are pretty self explanatory."

What about the video?

"I hate myself for the video already, I dunno, it’s not great, I think it’s fairly shit. But you have to have something to put on YouTube right, and I don’t have time to fuck about making it more than a 3 out of 10."

"Poison" and the B-side "Sub Sub Bass" - which you can listen to over at the excellent Gold Flake Paint - will both be available on all digital platforms on 14 January.
